| Captain Phillips is layered examination of the United States in 2009 hijacking the Maersk Alabama container ship with a crew of Somali pirates. It is - by director Paul Greengrasss typical lens - either pulse-pounding thriller and a complex portrait of the countless effects of globalization. The film focuses on the relationship between Alabamas commander, Captain Richard Phillips (twice Oscar? -Winner Tom Hanks), and Somalia, the pirate captain, Muse (Barkhad Abdi), who took him hostage. Phillips and Muse are set on an unstoppable collision known as Muse and destination Phillips armed his crew; in the ensuing confrontation, 145 miles off the coast of Somalia, and men find themselves at the mercy of forces beyond their control. |
